WINNIE ROSE HUGHES WARD Graveside services for longtime Cortez resident Winnie Rose Hughes Ward will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 19 at Cortez Cemetery. Visitation has been scheduled for Sunday afternoon from 2 to 4 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Winnie passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 10, 2010 at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 94. She was born on July 22, 1915 in Hereford, Tex. the daughter of George Bascom and Mitte (Boydston) Hughes. Winnie met and married Edward Odell Ward Sr. and to this union seven children were born. Winnie and Odell traveled around until they made their permanent home in Cortez. Odell and his son, Tex opened W-W Roofing. Winnie worked as a cook most of her life, and boy could she cook. Winnie also cleaned San Juan Dental Clinic for numerous years, retiring when she was about 70 years old. Winnie enjoyed working in the yard; if there was an old pot around, she had flowers in it. Surviving Winnie are her children, Della Joan Gupton and husband Arlen of Longmont, Colo., Norma Jean Ragan of Antlers, Okla., Phyllis Mollohan of Cortez, Texie Young and husband, Darrell of Cortez, Rosalee Hamilton and husband, Ted of Dove Creek, and James, better known as “Rocky” Ward and wife, Karna of Cortez. Winnie also leaves behind her daughter-in-law, Carole Ward of Cortez; 22 grandchildren; 30 great-grandchildren; 10 great-great-grandchildren; and numerous nephews and nieces. She was preceded in death by her parents, Mittie and George Bascom Hughes; her husband, Edward Odell Ward Sr.; her son, Edward Odell “Tex” Ward Jr.; her sister, Velma Lee Cornett; and her sons-in-law, Billy Wayne Ragan and Larry Mollohan. Mom, Granny, you will be missed by each and every one of us and all the people you knew. You were a very special person and had a heart of gold that will flow throughout each and every one of us. Mom, Granny, you were the special person that welcomed everyone you met, you were a true blessing for everyone that knew you. It was a great honor to have you as our mother, grandmother, great and great-great-grandmother. Have a great journey. You will be truly missed. We love you Mom, Granny, Great Granny and Great Great Granny. From all of your family, we love you.
