WILLIAM RAYMOND “BILL” KING Memorial services for longtime Cortez resident William Raymond “Bill” King will be held at 10 a.m. Friday, May 22, at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Inurnment will follow at Cortez Cemetery with Military Honors and Masonic Rites being observed. Bill passed away Saturday, May 16, 2009 at his home due to cancer. He was born in Culver City, Calif. May 28, 1930 to Raymond Lester King and Elvira Marion King. He was raised in Southern California and in the Lebanon Community near Dolores. Bill graduated the 8th grade from the Lebanon School House where he met his first love, Marion Caylor and her brothers, Duane, Ron and Ivan Caylor, the children of Harold and Helen Caylor. Bill graduated George Washington High School in Los Angeles, Calif. June 1948. Bill served the United States Navy from October 1948 until the 21st of October, 1952 during the Korean Conflict as an Aviation Electrician Mate and Petty Officer Second Class, AE3. He received his honorable discharge. Bill and Marion Caylor were married at NAAS Chapel, Miramar Naval Base, San Diego, Calif. on January 12, 1951. Bill then continued his career as a fourth generation journeyman meat cutter where he had many successes in Southern California. Bill and Marion raised two daughters, later enjoying their two granddaughters. Bill and Marion returned to Cortez in June 1979 where Bill used his skills as a chef at the Ponderosa Restaurant in Dolores and the Elks Lodge. He also used his hands as a private building contractor and handyman. His loving wife of 47 years, Marion, passed away June 29, 1995. Bill was blessed with a second union of marriage to Daisy Mae (Duncan) Ives on April 26, 1996. He embraced his second family and enjoyed his many friends and family members. Bill was a man who lived his life with passion, hard work, and love of family and friends. Bill was a Master Mason of the University Lodge in Torrance, Calif. and later transferred to the Masonic Lodge in Rico. He was also a member of the VFW and recently joined the Legionnaires. Surviving Bill are his wife, Daisy Mae King of Cortez; daughter, Sherrie King Sletten of Los Angeles, Calif. along with her daughters, Ginger Renee Phillips and Amanda Louise Sletten; his stepchildren, Roger Ives of Yellow Jacket, Colo., Susan and Ralph Peters of Albuquerque, N.M., and Sheryl White of Fruita, Colo.; and by nine step-grandchildren and three step-great grandchildren. He loved you all. At the end, he was touched by the loving care and services of Hospice of Montezuma. In lieu of flowers, Bill and family request that donations be made in memory of Bill to Hospice of Montezuma, PO Box 740, Cortez, Colo. 81321.
