William Bethel "Bill" Powell

WILLIAM “BILL” POWELL Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, William Bethel “Bill” Powell will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Monday, Oct. 25 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. The Reverend H.H. Davis will be officiating. Visitation has been set for Sunday evening at the Ertel Chapel from 5 to 7 p.m. Bill was born Sept. 11, 1914 in Merit, Texas the son of H.A. and Bessie Powell. He passed away at his home in Cortez on Wednesday, Oct. 20, 2004 at the age of 90. Bill married Sue Jones in 1937; the couple spent 66 years together until Sue’s death in March of this year. Bill and Sue moved to Cortez in 1949. He was a wonderful husband and father. Bill delivered freight for Rio Grande Motor Way. He also found time to farm, which was a deep love of Bill’s. He was involved with the First Assembly of God Church at any opportunity that arose. He enjoyed being outdoors and was considered a great fisherman and gardener. Surviving Bill are his children, William Kenneth Powell and his wife, Susan of Denver, Colo., Gail Powell of Cortez, and Shirley Janiece Kitchens of Santa Fe, N.M.; eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren; and his brother, Aldridge Powell of Crosbyton, Texas. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Bill Powell with Hospice of Montezuma, 1345 S. Broadway, Cortez, Colo.
