Wayne Douglas Shew

February 2, 2012 — August 27, 2012

WAYNE DOUGLAS SHEW Memorial services for Cortez resident Wayne Douglas Shew will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, September 8 at the Arriola Bible Church. Pastor Kent Slyter will officiate. Graveside services were held August 30, 2012, at Holyoke Cemetery. Wayne Douglas Shew of Cortez, Colo. entered his Eternal Home August 27, 2012, at the age of 96. He was born February 2, 1916, to Charles Shew and Gladys Stickle Shew, on his grandparent's ranch, 17 miles southeast of Holyoke, Colo. There were three children in the family, Stuart, Wayne, and Thelma. The family soon moved to a farm north of Holyoke, where Wayne attended two "one room schools" (Silverbeam and Liberty). He finished his education in the Holyoke school system, graduating from high school in 1934. During his high school years, he worked for Morgan's Grocery. His first task was to deliver "Sale Bills" all over the town. Wayne took much interest in his town. He served as a Volunteer Fireman for many years. Several years were spent with Colver's Hardware, the Town of Holyoke, and his brother's watch repair and jewelry store, Shew's Jewelry, before purchasing Mutchie's Grocery and renaming it "Wayne's Grocery." This was a family owned and operated store for ten years. In 1959, the family purchased the Herbert Welper home and acreage on the east edge of Holyoke. It was here that the family enjoyed country living. Wayne's hobbies were horses, mules, and antiques. He loved going to farm and estate sales. Eventually Wayne's Grocery blended in with Shop-All, another grocery store in the town. This merge was very successful and Wayne was able to retire in 1981. After retirement, he enjoyed spending several summers helping his daughter and son-in-law with their farming operation, and in 1994, a move was made to Cortez. This enabled Wayne and Milly to be near both of their married daughters and their families. For several years, Wayne's eyes and ears had been failing, but he desired Milly to read the Bible to him. He was a sincere servant of God and his priorities were God, family, and friends. He was a man of few words, slow to anger, and regarded as a humble gentle man. His actions always spoke louder than his words. Wayne is survived by his wife Milly; his daughters Juli (Sam) and Kathi (Dave); 6 grandchildren, Tonya, Pamela, Jarrod, Joel, Carolyn, Nick; and 13 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother, and sister. Memorial contributions may be made to Mercy Mission Orphanage in Nepal, c/o Arriola Bible Church, 15998 Rd 22, Dolores, Colo. 81323.
