Wayne Bartlett (Bart) Highland passed away on October 3, 2017, at the age of 96. He was born on June 14, 1921, the fifth child of nine born to Royal Ray and Nellie Grace (Bartlett) Highland in Akron, Colorado. Surviving Bart are his wife, Mabel Lou (Scotte McQueen), and his children, Malcolm (Shari) Highland, Raye (Bill Brown) Highland, and Penny (Joe) Stevens, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his son, Gilbert, his parents, and all eight of his siblings. Born in Akron, Colorado, he was raised on a farm. He served in the U.S. Navy in the Pacific Arena during World War II, from 1941 to 1945. He graduated from a blacksmith school in California, where he met Scotte McQueen, whom he married on January 8, 1947. They had four children, Malcolm Bart, Raye Nell, Gilbert Ted, and Penny Suzanne. Soon after their marriage, they moved back to northeastern Colorado, where Bart worked as a blacksmith before going to work in the oil field, from shich he retired from Exxon in 1976. He then became a drilling consultant for another 20 years. Finally moving back to Cortez in 2003, he and Scotte joined the Trinity Lutheran Church. He loved gardening, hunting, fishing, and playing golf. Services will be held at Trinity Lutheran Church on October 14th at 4:00 P.M.
