VERNA GERTRUDE TOWNE Funeral services for longtime Mancos resident Verna Gertrude Towne will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, February 17 at Mancos First Baptist Church with Chaplain Rick Gregory officiating. Interment will follow at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation has been set for Friday morning from 9 to 11 a.m. at the Mancos First Baptist Church. Verna was born on October 8, 1920 in Mancos, Colo. the daughter of Vern Robbins and Gertrude (Wilkerson) Robbins. She passed away at her daughter's home in Durango on Sunday, February 12, 2012 at the age of 91. Always active in her community, Verna held membership in the Mancos First Baptist Church for many, many years. Also through her church, Verna ran the Teen Breakfast for quite some time. During World War II Verna was one of the "Rosie the Riveters". She was a member of the VFW Ladies Auxiliary and Lions Club. She loved time spent in flower gardens and gardening in general, feeding the birds, and most especially, time with her family. Surviving Verna are her son, Gary Towne and wife, Judy of Mancos; her daughter, Sandra Hedges and husband, Bob of Durango; grandchildren, Daniel Towne, Dennis Towne, Marja Towne, Marit Towne, Liesel Towne, Meagan Towne, Robert Hedges and wife, Virginia, Amy Potthoff and husband, Barrett, and Sue Mann; great grandchildren, Maria Romero and husband, Nick, Alec Potthoff, Austin Potthoff, Christopher Hedges and Ryan Mears; two sisters, Vergie Edwards and husband, Dick of Cortez and Eileen Moore and husband, Darwin of Rio Rancho, N.M.; and by numerous nieces and nephews. Verna was preceded in death by her husband, Arthur E. Towne in 1989; her parents; and by seven brothers and three sisters. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Verna Towne with the Lions Club.
