VERDA FAY BAXSTROM Memorial services for longtime Mancos resident Verda Fay Baxstrom will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, March 28 at the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. A Potluck will follow the services at the Legion. Verda was born on January 28, 1928 in Pritchett, Colo. the daughter of Hervey Hudson and Hazel Mae (Turpening) Hopper. She passed away on Saturday, March 21, 2009 at her residence at the age of 81. On April 12, 1947, Verda married Ernest Warren Baxstrom in Aztec, N.M. The couple shared 61 years of marriage before Ernie's passing in April of 2008. Verda enjoyed gardening, hunting, fishing, playing card games, sewing and quilting. Verda was a talented cake decorator who loved to cook. Surviving Verda are her daughters, Lenda Hurst and Tom Wilkerson of Mancos, Bette Lewis and husband, Edward of Mancos, and Sherry Payne of Mancos; nine grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Vera Tate of Pueblo, Colo., and John Hopper of Cortez. Verda was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Ernie Baxstrom; her son, Roy Leon Baxstrom in 1975; her sisters, Veda Wilson and Alvina McCulley; and by two brothers. Memorial contributions may be made in Verda's memory to cancer research.
