VELMA VIOLA KINGERY

  Graveside services for Velma Viola (Johns) Kingery will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, May 13, 2023 at Cortez Cemetery. Visitation has been scheduled for Friday evening from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel.

  Velma Viola (Johns) Kingery passed away peacefully Tuesday morning May 9, 2023 in Cortez, Colorado at the age of 92. She was surrounded and supported by her caregivers and her family. Velma was born on March 25, 1931 to John Clarkston Johns and Viola (Keisling) Johns. 

  Velma grew up in the Cortez area and graduated from Montezuma Cortez High School.  After high school, Velma moved to Arizona where she was a help and support to her family members living there. On returning to Cortez, Velma and William (Bill) Kingery began dating and were married September 1,1953 making their home in Cortez. While living in Cortez, their son, Donald Kingery was born and 13 years later their son, Robert Kingery was born also in Cortez. Velma loved being busy and being outdoors. She enjoyed fishing, hunting, camping and gardening. She also loved spending time with her family at family outings, potlucks and holidays.   

  Later in life, Velma loved spending time with her grandchildren doing projects and teaching them new things. She also spent many hours making beautiful quilts that she gave to her family, friends and donated to the VA hospital as a member of the DAR - Daughters of the American Revolution and enjoyed her association with others at their regular meetings.

  Velma is preceded in death by her husband, William (Bill) Kingery; by her parents, John and Viola Johns; and by nine of her siblings. Velma is survived by her sister, Daisy Mahaffey; her sons, Donald (Glenda) Kingery and Robert (Sharon) Kingery; her seven grandchildren, four great grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. Velma was a blessing and was loved by all that knew her. She will be missed by many.
