VELMA HELEN VANCE Funeral services for Eckert, Colo. resident and former Naturita resident, Velma Helen Vance will be held at 2 p.m. on Thursday, August 20 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Visitation has been scheduled for Thursday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. at Ertel Chapel. Helen was born on February 13, 1915 in San Marcos County, near Wimberly, Texas the daughter of Leander "Lee" and Virginia (A'dare) Hill, one of ten children. She passed away on Friday, August 14, 2009 at Horizons Nursing Home in Eckert at the age of 93. Helen grew up in Wimberly, graduating from the seventh grade. She moved with her family to Colorado when she was twelve. Her family settled in the Ucolo, Utah area near Dove Creek. Helen married Homer I. Vance at Monticello, Utah on December 6, 1934. They moved to Naturita, Colo. in 1947. She became Town Clerk and Police Magistrate of Naturita in 1952 and served until 1962, when she retired. Surviving Helen are her daughters, Nancy R. Walker and husband, Gary of Naturita, Colo., and Evelyn L. Icke of Grand Junction, Colo.; her sister, Ruth Sell of Albuquerque, N.M.; her sister-in-law, Mary A. Hill of Cortez; her grandchildren, Dewey Walker and wife, Kenita of Paonia, Colo., Colene Arnold of Naturita, Colo., Tinley Haskell and husband, Art of Naturita, Roxie Blackman and husband, Morrie of Collbran, Colo., and Dianna Decker and husband, Wayne of Glendale, Ariz.; 13 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren. Helen was preceded in death by her husband, Homer I. Vance; her son, Ronald L. Vance; her parents, Lee and Virginia Hill; her brothers, L.V. Hill, Leo Hill, Roscoe Hill, Woodrow Hill, and Adare Hill; her sisters, Virginia Hill, Valley Krebs, and Billie Rowe; and one great-grandchild, Kurt Walker.
