VEDA VIOLA WILSON Memorial services for lifelong Cortez resident, Veda Viola Wilson will be held at 2 p.m. on Monday, July 19 at the Arriola Bible Church. A dinner for family and friends will be held immediately following at the Arriola Community Center. Veda was born on March 17, 1926 in Springfield, Colo. the daughter of Hervie Hudson and Hazel May (Tarpening) Hopper. She passed away on Monday, July 12, 2004 in rural Cortez at the age of 78. In 1936 Veda moved to the Cortez area. She was a dedicated homemaker who loved her family dearly. Her first husband, Elbert W. Martin passed away in 1947. On January 20, 1951 in New Mexico Veda married James E. Wilson. Jim passed away in 2001 after sharing 50 years of marriage with Veda. Veda was active throughout her life. She loved dancing, and walked everyday. Family and friends were very important to Veda. She belonged to the Altrusa Friendship Club. Veda was a good seamstress, and liked gardening as well. Surviving Veda are her children, Eleanor Faye Baxstrom and husband, Patrick, Robert J. Martin, and Terry Lewis Wilson all of Cortez. Her grandchildren, Shannon Stephenson and husband, Gary, Alissa Baxstrom, Melissa Hanson and husband, Mark, and Tiffany 'Nikki' Wilson; and four great-grandchildren also survive Veda. She leaves her sisters and brother, Vera Tate of Pueblo, Colo., Verda Baxstrom and husband, Ern of Dolores, Alvina 'Skip' McCulley, and John J. Hopper both of Cortez; and numerous nieces and nephews. Preceding Veda in death were her parents; her first husband, Elbert W. Martin; her second husband, James E. Wilson; and two brothers.
