TRAVIS EDWIN DEWAYNE HUGHES Memorial services for longtime Cortez resident, Travis Edwin Dewayne Hughes will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 6 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Military services will be conducted by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. A visitation has been scheduled for Tuesday evening at the Ertel Chapel from 6 p.m. until 8 p.m. Travis was born on August 30, 1972 in Topeka, Kans. the son of Virgil Edward and Judy Arlene (Loe) Hughes. He passed away on Friday, April 1, 2005 in rural Montezuma County at the age of 32. Travis was an Army veteran who served his country well. He went to Fort Rucker, Alabama to become a Helicopter Crew Chief, and then on to Fort Sam Houston, Texas to receive his medical training, where he earned the title of Combat Flight Medic. He went on to Topeka, Kans. where he served with his brother, Brad. He became a member of the Drug Interdiction Team for the Governor of Kansas. This team would eradicate illegal plant life and drug distribution. Upon honorably discharging in September 1995 Travis entered the life of sales. His family recalls he was a natural born salesman. He enjoyed the outdoors, four-wheeling, his motorcycle, and country music. Travis was a good cook who loved to bar-b-que. He loved animals dearly and always had a dog while growing up. Above all he cherished and loved the time he spent with his children. Travis loved his family dearly. His brother was his best friend and had a hard time when he got ill. He called him every day to help his brother through. He will be missed greatly. Surviving Travis are his children, Taylor Mitchel Muse and Kelsey Lynne Hughes both of Clovis, N.M.; his parents, Virgil Edward Hughes of Larkspur, Colo., and Judy Arlene Ward of Topeka, Kans.; his brother, Brad Edward William Hughes and wife, Mary of Topeka, Kans.; his step-sister, Leann Chandler of Larkspur, Colo.; and his nephew, Lane Edward James Hughes of Topeka. Preceding him in death were his step-mother, Beverly Jean Hughes; his step-father, Matthew H. Ward; and his grandparents, Vivian B. Loe, George E. Hughes, Liberty Hughes, and Kenneth Kern. Memorial contributions can be made in Travis’ memory to the American Cancer Society.
