SUE POWELL Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident, Sue Powell were held at 2 p.m. on Monday, March 22 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment followed at the Cortez Cemetery. Pastors H.H. Davis and Don Henderson officiated. Sue was born on Feb. 4, 1920 in Floyd County, Texas the daughter of John Franklin and Willie Elba (Kirk) Jones. She passed away on Thursday, March 18, 2004 at her home in Cortez at the age of 84. In 1937 Sue married William 'Bill' Bethel Powell. They have spent the last 66 years together. She was a dedicated homemaker and a loving mother of one son, Williams and two daughters, Gail and Shirley. Her husband Bill Powell of Cortez; her children, William Kenneth Powell and wife, Susan of Denver, Colo., Gail Powell of Cortez, and Shirley Janiece Kitchens of Las Vegas, Nev. survive Sue. She leaves eight grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren; as well as her sisters, Leona Looney, Tommie Denison, Ernie Cotthaus, Maxine Beck, and Dana Applegate.
