STEPHEN IRA "STEVE" HAWKINS A celebration of life for lifelong Mancos resident Stephen Ira "Steve" Hawkins will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, January 3 at the Mancos United Methodist Church. Steve was born February 4, 1950 in Denver, Colo. the son of Herbert Lee and Janice Elizabeth (Freeman) Hawkins. He passed away at his Mancos home on Monday, December 30, 2013 at the age of 63. On July 12, 1969 in Mancos, Steve married the love of his life, Gwen Alexander. They shared 44 years of marriage. Steve attended and graduated from Fort Lewis College. After graduating, he became a self employed carpenter. Steve then worked at Manaugh Elementary School and Shiprock Consolidated School District as a music teacher for many years. After retirement from teaching, Steve became a dealer at the Ute Mountain Ute Casino. He was involved in his community and was a member of the Mancos Masonic Lodge #100 A.F. & A.M., Al Kaly Shriners of Southern Colorado, Mancos Water Conservation District and the Mancos United Methodist Church. Steve loved being outdoors and spent as much time as he could golfing, fishing, hunting, and skiing. Steve is survived by his wife, Gwen Hawkins of Mancos; his son, Boe Hawkins of Mancos; his grandchildren and their mother, Logan Hawkins, Ava Hawkins and Kerisha Hawkins all of Mancos; and his mother-in-law and father-in-law, Betty and Noland Alexander of Mancos. Preceding Steve in death are his parents, Herbert and Janice Hawkins; and grandchild, Chance Hawkins. Memorial contributions can be made in Steve's name to the Mancos Centennial Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 24, Mancos, Colo. 81328.
