SHIRLEY RAE DIXON MCDANIEL Shirley Rae Dixon McDaniel passed away on Thursday, August 18, 2016 in her home in Cortez, Colorado. Shirley was born on September 2, 1935 in Delta, Colorado to Vernice Lorraine (Pratt) Dixon and Charles Hover Dixon. In 1955 she married Harlan Lee McDaniel. They moved to Cortez in 1960 where together they raised three children. Shirley worked as a secretary for the Montezuma-Cortez School District from 1964 to 1997 where she touched the lives of many staff, students, and parents. Shirley loved raising and showing dogs in competitions, a passion she passed on to her children. In her retirement, Shirley enjoyed researching family genealogy, doing word search puzzles, and was a voracious reader. Shirley is survived by her son Lance of Cortez, daughter Sherilyn of Cortez, and son Kent (Marie) of Thornton, CO; granddaughters Megan of Phoenix, AZ and Cayla (Gerald) of Thornton, CO; great-granddaughter Marley of Thornton, CO; siblings Sharon Nan (Robert) Wear, Kenneth Hover (Judi) Dixon, Lawrence Dean Dixon, and Janice Cheryl (Curtis) Jones. The family will miss Shirley's quick wit and sarcastic sense of humor. Shirley was preceded in death by her husband of 57 years, Harlan "Mac" McDaniel, in 2012. A memorial service will be held on Saturday, September 3, 2016 from 3 5 PM at the Cortez Recreation Center, in the Mesa Room, located at 425 Roger Smith Ave. Cortez, CO 81321. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Shirley's name to Hospice of Montezuma County www.hospiceofmontezuma.org. We will always carry your memory in our hearts.
