SHELBY LEE BAILEY Funeral services for Cortez resident Pastor Shelby Lee Bailey will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, April 13 at the First United Methodist Church. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Shelby was born May 14, 1941 in Topeka, Kans. the son of Albert and Juanita Bailey. He passed away on Sunday, April 9, 2017 at Vista Mesa Assisted Living Center at the age of 75. Shelby married Marcie Lue Hillegas in Pender, Neb. on September 10, 1967. He was ordained as a minister on June 15, 1967 at the Evangelical Lutheran Church of America. Shelby served many different communities and parishes during his ministry, including: Scherer Memorial Church in Chapman, Kans., Our Savior in Durant, Okla., St. Mark's in Waterville, Kans., Greenleaf Church in Greenleaf, Kan., Faith Lutheran in Marcus, Iowa, and Peace Parish in Central, Kans. After retirement, Shelby served at Trinity Lutheran Church in Farmington, N.M. and he actively participated in the First United Methodist Church in Cortez. Shelby faithfully took part in Silver Sneakers and he held various positions on the Board of Directors for Hospice of Montezuma. In his free time, Shelby enjoyed camping and putting together puzzles. Surviving Shelby are his daughters, DeAun Bailey (Mike McCormick) of Wheaton, Kans. and Teresa Brown-Sanchez (Melvin) of Cortez; his grandchildren, Justin Bailey Fronce, Beth Bailey Brown, Will Brown, Erin Brown, Traven Sanchez; 10 foster children; and by his sister, Linda Timmon (Charles) of Wichita, Kans. Shelby was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Marcie Bailey; and by his brothers, Robert and Allen Bailey.
