ROY WILIIAM GOODE Graveside services for Roy William Goode, a longtime resident of Mancos will be held at 10 a.m., Tuesday, June 20 at Cedar Grove Cemetery. Visitation has been set for Monday afternoon from 5 to 7 p.m. at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Roy was born in Cortez on April 29, 1922 the son of John Ward and Velma Willie (Journey) Goode. He passed away at the Valley Inn Nursing Home in Mancos on Friday, June 16, 2006. He was 84 years old. Roy began riding as a jockey at the age of 18. He was a racehorse man through and through; his love of horses was first and last. On May 27, 1943 Roy married Wanda Zereta (Boston) Starr in Tijuana, Mexico beginning a lifelong partnership. After riding a number of years, Roy changed from rider to training race horses. Roy also worked for a number of years as a miner, mining uranium around the area. He was a hardworking man with his dedication to the family and was ready to do whatever work was provided in order to support his family. He taught his children a “work ethic” and the value of a man’s word. Roy was known to be an honest man and that “his word was his bond”. Surviving Roy are his wife of 63 years, Wanda Goode of Mancos; children, Jeanne Smith and husband, Jack of Mancos, Darell Goode of Mancos, Dan Goode also of Mancos, and Cindy Eckhardt and husband, Troy of San Antonio, Tex; and 14 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. Five sisters, Betty Addcock of California, Barbara Lewis and husband, Leo of Cortez, Geraldine Andersen and husband, Jim of Montrose, Colo., Mary Lou James of Cortez, and Judy Roseberry and husband, Kay of Grand Junction also survive Roy. Preceding Roy in death were two brothers, James and Robert Goode; a sister, Irma Nell Goode; his parents, John and Velma Goode; and his grandson, Darin Bradshaw.
