ROSE MERLE HUGHES Funeral services for longtime Cortez resident Rose Merle Hughes will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, December 31 at Arriola Bible Church. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Rose was born June 19, 1929 in Canadian, Tex. the daughter of John and Gertrude (Norman) Payne. She passed away on Thursday, December 22, 2016 at Madison House Assisted Living at the age of 87. Rose moved to Cortez from Texas with her family at the age of 16. She attended Montezuma Cortez High School and graduated in 1947. Rose then went on to attend Colorado Women's College in Denver for two years. On November 19, 1956 she married Howard Wayne Hughes. The couple raised three sons. Surviving Rose are her sons, Mark Hughes (Debra) of Midland, Tex., John Hughes (Mona) of Pleasant View, Colo., and Allen Hughes of Cortez; her grandchildren, Kari Lang (Jason) of Midland, Tex., Keli Hughes of Midland, Tex. and Brandon Hughes of Denver; and by four great-grandchildren. Rose was preceded in death by her parents; by her husband; and by her brother, John Payne Jr. The family would like to thank Madison House for the care Mrs. Hughes was given.
