ROSE HELEN CHIK HERRICK Memorial Services for longtime Cortez resident Rose Helen Chik Herrick will be held at 10:30 a.m. Friday, August 1 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Reverend Joseph L. Gallegos C.R. will officiate. Rose passed away at Madison House on July 19, 2008 at the age of 85. She was born on Sept. 18, 1922 in Caon City, Colo.; a daughter of Slavic immigrants. Her father was a silver miner in Leadville, Colo., then a truck farmer in Englewood, Colo. She married Jack Herrick in 1942. Rose supported Jack as he worked in the construction industry throughout the state for over 50 years. She and Jack moved to Dolores in 1979 where they enjoyed life at their Lakeview farm. She was a gifted athlete who excelled at golf and bowling. She was a huge baseball fan, but also followed football and relished competing in football pools. Other favorite pastimes were cooking, gardening, embroidery, playing cards, visiting the casino, and, most of all, taking care of her family. She was a member of the VFW Ladies' Auxiliary, the Elk's Club and the Emblem Club. She had a great sense of humor and adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Jack and Johanna Chik; husband Jack; son John; and seven siblings. She is survived by her son Paul and wife Dayna of Dolores; her granddaughters Amy Elnicki of Centennial, Colo., and Becky Clabaugh of Colorado Springs; five great-grandchildren Taylor, Dillon, Connor, Kendall and Meredith; daughter-in-law Sharon Stell of Colorado Springs and numerous nieces and nephews. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to Madison house of Cortez or to Hospice of Montezuma County.
