ROBERTA SHIRLEY "BERTA" HUNT Funeral services for Cortez resident Roberta Shirley "Berta" Hunt will be held at 1 p.m. on Thursday, August 14 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Greenmount Cemetery in Durango. Pastor Anthony Maes will officiate. Berta was born on March 9, 1921 in Breen, Colo. the daughter of Robert Simpson and Mary Edith (Maness) Conner. She passed away on Friday, August 8, 2008 at her residence at the age of 87. On November 29, 1939, Berta married James Chandler Hunt in Aztec, N.M. She and James would spend hours prospecting in the mountains. Berta loved the outdoors and nature, she enjoyed gardening and spending time in the mountains. Birds and plants brought her much happiness. Berta also enjoyed going to church and visiting with her church family. Tuffy, Berta's poodle was her pride and joy and her loving companion to the end. Surviving Berta are her daughters, Nancy Hill and husband, Bob of Cortez, and Erma Verdahl and husband, Lee of Austin, Colo.; her grandchildren, Joni Verdahl, Kelli Soria, Robert Verdahl, Terri Verdahl, Tamra Hill, Kristy Hill, Cody Hill, and Levi Hill; 12 great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Brian Conner of Hesperus, Colo., and Dora Hunt also of Hesperus. She was preceded in death by her parents; an infant son; her husband of 61 years, James Hunt; her son, Corky Hunt; her grandchildren, Shelley Smith and Ronnie Hunt; and her siblings, Allyne Fisher, Robert Conner, and Albert Conner.
