RICHARD “POKEY” MEREDITH Memorial services for longtime Cortez resident, Richard “Pokey” Meredith will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday, June 12 at the Cortez First United Methodist Church with Reverends Lynn Evans and Suzanne Listemann officiating. Pokey was born the son of Frank Leslie and Martha Ethel (Houchins) Meredith on August 14, 1924 in Alderson, W.Va. He passed away at his home on Sunday, June 3, 2007 at the age of 82. In the mid 1960s, Pokey and his family moved to the Cortez area where he was employed as a Social Worker. Pokey’s wife, Frances passed away in 1993. He married Ruby Evelyn (LeNeve) Motta on September 23, 2001 at the Cortez First United Methodist Church sharing over five years of marriage with her. Pokey proudly served his nation in the Army Air Corps and after his discharge, was a member of the American Legion. He, too, was a member of the Cortez Methodist Church and sang in the choir. In his free time he enjoyed playing the trombone, working with leather and gardening. He, at one time, was a Boy Scout leader. Surviving Pokey are his loving wife, Ruby Meredith of Cortez; two sons, Rick Meredith of Cortez and Rob Meredith and wife, Jan of Denver; stepchildren, Russ Motta and wife, Sandy of Grinnell, Iowa and Michelle Lustig and husband, Steve of Cheney, Wash.; granddaughter, Holly Peacock as well as five other grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Richard “Pokey” Meredith with Hospice of Montezuma, PO Box 740, Cortez.
