Raymond Leo Murphy

RAYMOND LEO MURPHY Memorial services for Cortez resident, Raymond Leo Murphy will be held at 2 p.m. on Wednesday, April 13 at the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Both the Ute Mountain Legion Post and Mancos VFW Post will conduct the services. Raymond was born June 18, 1921 at Luton, Iowa to Ruth Bernice (Montgomery) and Lawrence Patrick Murphy. He went to meet his Maker on Saturday, April 9, 2005, at the age of 83. Ray, also known as “Hun” or “Murph” attended Luton Consolidated School, graduating in 1939. He joined the United States Navy serving from 1942 to 1946. He served aboard the U.S.S. Breckinridge during World War II and served in both theaters of war, Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. He married Donna Marie Morse on February 21, 1947. Ray was a charter member of the Robert Irish American Legion Post in Salix, Iowa and a member of the Ute Mountain American Legion Post and the Mancos VFW Post. Throughout Ray’s life he had occupations including drilling rig motorman for seven years and numerous years farming. In 1984 he retired from operating a road grader for Woodbury County, Iowa. He loved to spend his spare time in the woods hunting, fishing and camping with his family. He also enjoyed gardening and his many friends. Ray loved having his grandchildren around as much as possible. Surviving Ray are his beloved wife of 58 years, Donna Murphy of Cortez; his daughter, Patty and Keith Tilton and their children, Richina and John Orr, Debraa Delgado, Christina Tilton, Mitchell Delgado and William Delgado, his son, Daniel and Jill Murphy and children, Yoli Murphy, Tina Murphy, Louis Murphy, Sylvia Murphy, Carlin Murphy, Alena Murphy, Casey Murphy, Levi Murphy and Bennett Murphy; youngest daughter, Rosalie and George Young and children, Alicia Young, Dimitri Young, Millie and Mark Austin, Cassie Young, Tasha and Marvin Blumer, Katie Young, Phoenix Young and Summer Young; and daughter-law, Sandy Beck. He was the proud great grandfather of Drake Blumer and Michael and Marcus Young. Three sisters, Lucy and Glenn Reynolds, Shirley and Bob Cody, and Beulah Murphy and several nieces and nephews also survive him. He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother and one sister.
