Phyllis Jean Gapp

March 20, 1938 — June 17, 2016

PHYLLIS JEAN (COX) GAPP Phyllis Jean (Cox) Gapp was born March 20, 1938. She grew up under the loving guidance of her parents, Cecil and Helen M. (Brown) Cox in Cheyenne, Wyo. and welcomed her sister, Marilyn "Joanne" when she was eight years old. All of her school years were spent in Cheyenne. In 1956, Phyllis met John "Jack" Gapp, who was an Airman stationed at Warren Air Force Base. Finding the love of her life, Phyllis and Jack were married February 14, 1956 at Grace Nazarene Church in Cheyenne. Forever Valentines, they journeyed from Wyoming to California, from Montana to Colorado. They believed in living life through the windshield and couldn't bring themselves to stay in one place for too long. During their adventures, Phyllis and Jack welcomed four children into their lives as well as a faithful Whistle Pig hunting Scottish terrier by the name of Jenny. Working in many fields, Phyllis found her calling in medical billing. Many years were spent at Southwest Memorial Hospital where she retired in 1993. Jack and Phyllis were avid motorcycle enthusiasts and members of the Black Canyon Motorcycle Club. Their travels took them all over North America. Continuing their travels upon retirement, Jack and Phyllis set out for the open road in the first of several "home on wheels" R.V.'s. They toured the United States with the thirst for new sights, history and meeting new people. After a few years, Phyllis and Jack decided to become the quintessential "Snow Birds" wintering in Quartzsite, Ariz. and summering as Camp Hosts at various camp grounds in Southwest Colorado. Their favorite spot was at Graham Creek at Vallecito Lake. In 2008, health issues grounded them in Dolores, Colo. where they lived until Jack's passing. Phyllis then resided with her daughter in Mancos. Phyllis was preceded in death by her parents; by her beloved husband, Jack; grandson, Kenneth Gapp; and by her faithful Whistle Pig hunting pup, Jenny. She is survived by her sister, Marilyn "Joanne" Salisbury (Dick); her brother-in-law, William "Bill" Gapp (Dot); her children, Cheryl Beene (Jim), David Gapp, Robert Gapp (Maya), and Loren Gapp (Deborah); a special nephew, Russ Gapp (Cindee); and by nine grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. A private memorial service will be held Saturday, August 20, 2016 at 9 a.m. at 13549 Road 28 in Dolores. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made in Phyllis Gapp's name to Renew.
