Oscar Hamilton

June 22, 1936 — May 2, 2017

Lifelong Dolores resident, Oscar Hamilton passed away peacefully on May 2, 2017. Oscar was born June 22, 1936 to Art and Bernice Hamilton in McPhee Colo. He graduated from Montezuma Cortez High School and in 1954. He joined the Army in 1958 and later the National Guard until 1965. Oscar found the love of his life and married Barbara (Baker) Hamilton in 1961. Oscar and Barbara were married for 55 years and had two sons, Brent and Rusty Hamilton. Oscar was a lifelong farmer, farming in the Dolores and Pleasant view area. Oscar made his home in Montezuma County. He started driving tractor when he was six years old and started farming with his father, Art and uncle, Bill Hamilton. Oscar enjoyed farm work and spent his entire life following that love. There was no task to big or small! He was often heard saying "where there is a will there is a way" we would say "where there is an Oscar there's a way." He could fix anything, build anything and tear things up as well! He was a mechanic, carpenter, butcher and welder. He would find the time to help neighbors and friends. Oscar continued to farm and only started slowing down last year when he suffered a stroke. Oscar was devoted to his family and the community. Over the years he served on numerous boards to include the Dolores School District, San Juan Basin Votec and the Dolores Fire Protection District. Many of the things Oscar helped build are still being used today. He put in many hours building the Dolores football field and baseball fields. He loved baseball! He was a little league coach and avid spectator! He enjoyed attending his sons and grandsons baseball games. Hey also enjoyed hunting and being outdoors. Oscar is survived by his wife, Barbara Hamilton; his sons, Brent and wife, Christine of Aztec, Rusty and wife, Kim of Dolores; his grandsons, Daurmaun wife, Dianna Hamilton of Aztec N.M., Stetson and Tel Hamilton of Dolores; and his granddaughter, Rayla and husband, Danny Stephens of Farmington N.M. Also surviving Oscar are his two sisters Maribeth and husband, Melvin Hicks of Cortez and Gloria and husband, Jerry Hall of Dolores; his niece Kendall and husband, Stacy Allen and their daughter, Calyn and husband, Wes Coleman.
