MELVYN J. HORROCKS Funeral services for longtime Mancos resident, Melvyn J. Horrocks will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday, January 14 at the Mancos Church of Jesus Christ of Latter- Day Saints. Interment will follow at the Webber Cemetery. Bishop Lyman Bayles will be presiding. A visitation has been scheduled for Saturday morning one hour prior to service time at the church. Melvyn died Friday, January 6, 2006 at Mercy Medical Center in Durango at the age of 65 after an extended illness. He was born Dec. 28, 1940 in Vernal, Utah to Rodney Horrocks and Phoebe Hatch Horrocks. He married Esther Sheldon in Durango, Colo., January 19, 1963. Together they celebrated 42 years of marriage and had six wonderful children. Melvyn and Esther lived in Alaska, Kansas, Colorado, Utah, Florida, Wyoming and for the last 19 years, in Mancos. He worked for Montezuma County as a heavy equipment operator for 19 years. He had to retire due to illness. Melvyn was Bishop of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints twice in Mancos and once in Syracuse, Utah. He held many positions throughout his life. His faith, hard work, good deeds, and endurance are an imprint of a legacy passed on to his children, grandchildren, and everyone his life touched. He will be missed greatly. Surviving Melvyn are his wife, Esther of Mancos; his children, Dorine Strom and husband, Rudy of Cowley, WY, Kallie Hershberger and husband, Jimmy of Mancos, Stacy Horrocks and wife, Michelle of Pine, Colo., Vicki Arnold and husband, Doug of Conifer, Colo., Abe Horrocks and John Horrocks, both of Mancos; his three brothers, Dwain Horrocks and wife, Barbara, Kent Horrocks and wife, Jane, and Neil Horrocks and wife, Lila, all of Utah; his sister, Sherene Goddard and husband, Pat of Dolores; 16 grandchildren, and numerous nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents; a brother, Doyle Horrocks; and his sister, Gayla Zufelt.
