MELVIN CHARLES CARLSON Memorial services for Cortez resident Melvin Charles Carlson will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 1 at the Trinity Lutheran Church in Cortez. Reverend Don Thompson will officiate. Reverend Steven Carlson will deliver the message. Melvin was born to Emil and Ruth Carlson on Oct. 29, 1922 in Brea, Calif. He died at home on Sunday, April 25, 2004, at the age of 81. On Oct. 24, 1941, Melvin married Velma Mae Withers in Brea, Calif. They were married for 61 years. Melvin served during World War II in the Navy for 3 years. In his leisure, Melvin enjoyed fishing, hunting and also working in his shop. He was a member of the Masons and the Elks. Melvin was a Scout Master and received the Golden Bear Award. Surviving Melvin are his wife, Velma Carlson of Cortez; and his children, Kenneth Carlson and wife, Lou Anne of Cortez, and Steven Carlson and wife, Mary of Manhattan Beach, Calif. Six grandchildren, Ryan Carlson and wife, Molly of Belaire, Kans., Tom Carlson and wife, Sheri, of Pullup, Wash., Julie Eikenberry and husband, Colton of Scott City, Kans., Jill Carlson of Las Vegas, Nev., Hilary Carlson of Flagstaff, Ariz., and Taylor Carlson of Cortez; five great grandchildren; and his sister, Mildred Russell of Brea, Calif. also survive Melvin. Preceding Melvin in death were his parents, Ruth and Emil Carlson; and two sisters, Evelyn Stewart and Ruth Hinzpeter. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Melvin Carlson to the American Heart Association.
