MELVA CLAUDINE SMITH Memorial services for lifelong area resident Melva Claudine Smith will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, August 18 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Melva was born on March 14, 1940 in Cortez the daughter of William Claude and Ruby Opal (Scott) Daves. She passed away on Friday, August 13, 2010 at her Dolores home at the age of 70. On May 7, 1960, Melva married James Arthur "Jim" Smith in Pleasant View. Melva was a member of the Emblem Club and she enjoyed time spent playing Bridge with her friends at the Ponderosa. Christmas time brought much joy and happiness to Melva's life, it was her favorite time of year. Melva loved trips to Lake Powell, jeeping near Ouray, and going camping. Being outdoors and bowling were other activities she enjoyed. Melva loved her grandchildren deeply and time spent with them was very special to her. Surviving Melva are her husband of 50 years, Jim Smith of Dolores; and her children, Mark Smith and wife, Deneille of Ulster, Penn., Kim Garvin and husband, Darrell of Rock Springs, Wyo., and Grant Smith of Dolores. Melva also leaves behind seven grandchildren, Brittanie Smith, Kiffanie Smith, Steven Smith, Casey Garvin, Kelly Garvin, Broc Smith and Drake Smith; two great-grandchildren, Kambrie and Braxton; and her siblings, Doris Walters and husband, Gene of Grand Junction, Colo., Dick Daves and wife, Jeanette of Cortez, Don Daves of Carlsbad, N.M., and Dean Daves and wife, Jolene of Cortez. She was preceded in death by her parents; and by her sister, Betty Lancaster.
