MAYNARD DARROW PECK Maynard Darrow Peck was born February 5, 1923 in Rose, Kan. the son of Maynard Riley and Hazel Irene (Martin) Peck. He passed away on Monday, July 9, 2012 at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 89. Darrow served his country during World War II. He was in the 853rd Aviation Engineers building runways in Africa and India. Darrow was a passenger on the ill-fated H.M.T. Rhona on the day after Thanksgiving of 1943. It was sunk by a German guided missile. Over 1100 troopers lost their lives that night. Darrow was honorably discharged after the war. On November 12, 1948, Darrow married Thelma Belle Cooper in Bentonville, Ark. He was a member of the V.F.W. and the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Darrow worked for Montezuma Plywood and Nielson's Construction for many years. In his free time, Darrow enjoyed woodworking and making picture frames, and rock hunting. His grandchildren and great-grandchildren said, "They always looked forward to their Dutch rubs from Grandpa. They will miss them." Surviving Darrow are his loving wife of 63 years, Thelma Belle (Cooper) Peck of Dolores; his children, Gene Peck and wife, Dixie of Dolores, Judy Gallegos and husband, Adolph of Cortez, and Sheri Noyes and husband, Dan of Cortez; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild. Darrow was preceded in death by his parents; and by his siblings, Bernice Smith and Russel Peck. Cremation has taken place and no services are planned. Memorial contributions may be made in Maynard Darrow Peck's name to either the Dolores or Lewis-Arriola Fire Departments.
