Mary Lou Asbury of Cortez, CO, left this life April 18, 2018, after a brief illness, in her home. She was born December 4, 1933 to Carver and Louise (Ellis) Gunz of Kansas City, MO. She is survived by her sons Greg, of Helena MT, and David, of Ft. Collins, CO. She has four grandchildren, Sophia Asbury of Bismarck, ND, Christina Asbury of Helena, MT, Jonathan Asbury of Loveland, CO and Madelaine Asbury, of Oceanside CA. Mary Lou was preceded in death by her sons Kenneth and Douglas, and her first husband Gene. Mary Lou earned her teaching degree from Fresno State College and her masters degree in elementary counseling from Western State College. She taught school in Monte Vista, CO, Dolores, CO, and Shiprock, NM, from which she retired in 1995. Mary Lou was an avid traveler and loved to share her experiences with friends, students and family. She enjoyed music. She was an avid sports fan and cheered for the Colorado Avalanche, Kansas City Chiefs, Kansas Jayhawks, and Notre Dame Fighting Irish. Mary Lou loved the community of Cortez. She was active in the League of Women Voters, Cortez Public Library Board and the Southwest Memorial Hospital Board. She was very excited about the expansion of the hospital. She also volunteered at the Cortez Welcome Center for several years. Services will be held at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Cortez on April 21, 2018 at 11:00 am. Her ashes will be interred in Ft. Collins, CO at a later date. In lieu of flowers, it was her request that donations be made to one of the following charities for children: UNICEF, Boys Town, Salesian Missions, and the Good Samaritan Center.
