Mary Imel

Funeral services for Mary Imel will be held at 10:00 a.m. on Friday, September 22, 2023 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Pastor Marvin Graves will officiate.

Mary Luthi was born on October 29, 1939 in Bayfield, Colorado.  She passed away on Saturday, September 16, 2023 at Vista Grande Inn at the age of 83.   Surviving Mary are her loving husband of 42 years, Dan Imel of Cortez; her son, Steve Farris (Lori) of Cortez; and her brother, David Luthi (Paula). Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and by her siblings, Myron Luthi, Robert Luthi, and Lucille Waterman.

Mary loved her family with all her heart.  She would do anything for any one of her family members.  Mary had many interests throughout her life.  When she was younger, Mary enjoyed horseback riding and working at A&W Rootbeer.  Mary enjoyed going for rides, going to auctions, and going to Sonic with Dan.  Everyone knows them from all the time they spent in the blue and white GMC at Sonic.  Mary LOVED to crochet.  She crocheted many afghans and chair covers.  She especially enjoyed crocheting Pansy afghans.  In fact, she made 10 or more.  Lori’s afghan is laying on the casket.  Mary loved German Shepherds.  At one time, they had three German Shepherd puppies. 

After being diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes in her teens, Mary continued working hard and was not going to let it stop her from doing anything she wanted.   She watched her cousins, cleaned houses, and helped her parents.  She worked for a short time at City Market, and then worked at Safeway for over 20 years.  Mary was a single parent and worked hard to provide everything Steve needed.

We will be seeing Mary again. We are going to miss her, but are thankful she is no longer in pain.  

 Surviving Mary are her loving husband of 42 years, Dan Imel of Cortez; her son, Steve Farris (Lori) of Cortez; and her brother, David Luthi (Paula). Mary was preceded in death by her parents; and by her siblings, Myron Luthi, Robert Luthi, and Lucille Waterman.

Memorial contributions can be made in Mary’s name to the American Diabetes Association.
