I was born December 19, 1943 at home on a farm in rural Dolores County between Dove Creek and Cahone. My parent’s names are Calvin Derwin Gore Sr. and Cleo Irene (West) Gore. They named me Marilynn Irene, but called me “Lynn” from the beginning. Grandma West tells of coming to help out when I was born and I was almost a month overdue.
My brother Franklin “LeRoy” Gore was 19 months old when I was born.
When I was 3 and LeRoy was 4, Daddy took us North of town to a patch of sagebrush just off the county road and started stepping off a measurement and driving stakes in the ground– then he tied heavy twine from one stake to another- that was the beginning of our house- the one I still live in. The streets weren’t there yet, and there were no houses between ours and the 7th Day Adventist Church.
This is a fraction of the first part of Lynn’s life as she wrote to a journal to her only granddaughter at the time, Shasta Baxter. The next few pages are the most important of her 76 years on this earth. She tells of accepting Jesus Christ as her savior, and from there her story is one of faith, trials, hopes, and finally the greatest reward ever, Eternal Life with Jesus her King.
Lynn and Courtney Eugene Smith were united in marriage 22nd of August 1964. They were both employed by the Dolores County School District. Lynn drove the school bus for over 30 years hauling kids safely all over the state. When Courtney retired as Transportation Supervisor in 1996, the school district hired Lynn to replace him. Lynn not only worked in the transportation side of school, she was a substitute teacher, school board member, and basketball and baseball score keeper. She has served on the Library Board and Dolores County Sr. Board.
Lynn has been a faithful member and pillar of the First Baptist Church in Dove Creek for 60 years. She has served as Sunday School teacher, Ladies Bible study, leader and Secretary to the church. Everyone who knew Lynn knew she was who you went to for Knowledge of the Bible, or plants, or animals, or babies or about anything, but especially the WORD of GOD. She knew HIM, loved Him, served HIM, and taught others about HIM.
The ones left behind missing her, but rejoicing in the knowledge of GODS amazing grace of knowing she is with the Lord, are her children:
LaVerna Baxter (Jerry) Blayne Smith (Dawn) LaRita Randolph (Travis) and Gary Smith (Jenny) all of Dove Creek and Cahone.
