Marilyn Volm, 86, of Dolores, Colorado, passed away on May 13, 2023, with her family by her side.
Marilyn was born December 6, 1936, to Paul and Margaret (Merrians) Schuetz in Horton, Kansas. After Marilyn graduated from Mount St. Scholastica in Atchison, Kansas in 1955, she attended Clarks Business College where she received an associate’s degree in accounting.
While attending Clarks Business College and after she graduated, Marilyn worked as bookkeeper and secretary for Casson’s Construction. In March 1959, Marilyn met her husband Tom Volm on a blind date, and they married on October 24, 1959 in Mercier, Kansas. In 1960, she went to work for Security Benefit Insurance company as an accountant. After getting married Tom and Marilyn had three children Tom, Mary and Marie while they were stationed at Forbes Air Force Base. After the birth of Marilyn’s second child in 1963, she decided not to return to work and became a full-time homemaker. Marilyn and Tom left Forbes, AFB in 1964, moving to Colorado for five years while Tom was stationed at Air Force Academy in Colorado Springs. While there, they both fell in love with the state of Colorado. With Tom being in the Air Force, they were not able to stay in Colorado, so Marilyn’s next move was to Wisconsin to be with Tom’s parents, while he was stationed in Osan, Korea. After Tom returned from Korea, they moved to San Antonio, Texas for four years and then Ogden, Utah for a year until Tom retired from the Air Force. They then ventured up to Spokane, Washington for three years, before returning to Palmer Lake, Colorado for ten years. Their travels did not stop there, they went on to live in Los Alamos, New Mexico for one year and Alamogordo, New Mexico for seven years before returning to Colorado once again. They relocated to Cortez, Colorado for four years while they travel and built their forever home in Dolores, Colorado.
While Marilyn was busy traveling around the country raising her family, she was also active in many organizations, especially those supporting children, the elderly and the Catholic Church. She continued her involvement in the Catholic Daughters and the Dolores Olive branch until her passing.
Marilyn was predeceased by her parents, Paul and Margaret and granddaughter Jennifer Volm. She is survived by her husband Tom, children Tom Volm and wife Gail, Mary Thiesing and partner Scott Ehmke, Marie Volm and partner Tom Gardner, brothers John (Dodie) Schuetz, Gary (Bettie) Schuetz, and Sam (Diann) Schuetz, granddaughters Jenna (Ross) Campbell, Ellen (Jeremy) Davis, great grandson Boaz Campbell, and three nephews and their families.
