Loy Ann Kenyon of Cortez, Colorado passed away January 23, 2025, at the age of 90.
Loy Ann was born on a hot day in Moab, Utah on June 29, 1934, to Elsie (Snyder) Rutledge and Herman Harper Rutledge.
Her early life was spent in Oakland, California where her dad owned a roofing company. When she was eight, her dad was drafted into the army during World War II. She remembered this being a hard time for her family. Her mom ran the roofing company and Loy Ann and younger sister, Rita, had to do a lot of the housework. She had a very special bond with her sister that lasted throughout their lives.
In 1955, Loy Ann moved back to Cortez, Colorado and her cousin introduced her to Wayne Kenyon. They were married on May 9, 1956, and together they raised six children.
In 1975 they built a home together, doing almost all the work themselves. They lived there for fifty years, and she always referred to it as her “new house”.
Christmas was her favorite holiday, and she really made it special for everyone. She was an excellent cook and her son, Dale, always said she should market her divinity!
She grew up loving books, movies and music and passed these loves to her children and grandchildren. She loved all kinds of music from Bob Dylan to Willie Nelson. Her home is filled with hardback books – she never wanted to read from an e-reader. In her spare time, Loy Ann loved reading, doing needlework, knitting, crocheting, refinishing furniture and most of all quilting. She made the most beautiful quilts for her family. All were quilted by hand.
Loy Ann lost her beloved husband of 63 years in 2020, and her life was never the same after that. She continued to live independently until her death. She will be lovingly remembered by her children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews. She is joined in rest by her husband, Wayne Kenyon, her mother, Elsie Rutledge, her father, Harper Rutledge, her sister, Rita Stone, stepson, Bill Kenyon, stepson Jim Kenyon and grandson, Jeffrey Shull.
Surviving Loy Ann are her son Dan (Dianna) Kenyon, daughter Sherry (Dave) Larsen, son Dale (Kathy) Kenyon, daughter Ellen (Greg) Black, seventeen grandchildren, numerous great grandchildren, sister-in-law, Vivienne Kenyon; and many treasured nieces and nephews.
A Celebration of Life is planned for summer.
