LOUISE LENA LUCERO
1946-2019
Louise Lena Lucero passed away Friday, May 17, 2019 at age 72 surrounded by family after an arduous battle with cancer.
Louise was born December 26, 1946 to David Gonzales and Tillie Gonzales (Anaya) in Durango, Colorado. Louise spent the majority of her adult life in the Durango and Ignacio area but in recent years resided in both Las Vegas, Nevada and Cortez, Colorado.
It is often said that big things come in small packages, this was the case with Louise. While she may not have been big in stature she was big in personality, drive, endurance, strength, temperament and love. She definitely lived by the words “Go big or go home!”- She did nothing half- hearted.
Louise had a great love for her family even if it was at times unspoken. She had a great faith and love for God and his promises. She was very kind hearted, friendly, funny, and an old school social networker. There was no place she would be that she didn’t know someone.
Louise enjoyed a career as a licensed hairdresser in Ignacio for many years where she worked alongside her husband, Fred Lucero at his barber shop. She also enjoyed her time working with her clients at Community Connections.
Louise enjoyed a good round of golf at Hillcrest golf course or just hitting some balls around. She loved her western movies as well as NCIS and CSI. Another of her hobbies was doing crossword puzzles, puzzles and crocheting and knitting Afghans as well as posting and liking things on Facebook. When she resided in Las Vegas, she has a fondness for the casino buffets and spoke of them often. She also had a love for her small dogs that were loving and trusted companions to her.
Louise was a very friendly, warm-hearted and kind person who enjoyed visits from friends and family; was an excellent cook and baker and was known for her beef and cheese manicotti, flour tortillas and biscochittos-a recipe that she passed down to future generations.
Louise was preceded in death by her parents, David and Tillie Gonzales; her brother, David Gonzales; and grandson, Stephen Medina. She is survived by her children, Marie Medina of Durango, Gina Tyler (Justin Tyler) of Bayfield and Eugene Montoya (Shannon Montoya) of Kalamazoo, Michigan; her brother, Charles Gonzales (Ruth Gonzales) of Ignacio, Laura Medina of Durango, Christopher Gonzales (Lori Gonzales) of Denver; 10 grandchildren; 3 great-grandchildren and one on the way; longtime companion, Celestino Martinez of Nevada; and many nieces, nephews and cousins.
No services will be held at the request of Louise. A private family ceremony will occur at interment of ashes.
Donations may respectfully be made to Hospice of Montezuma County and Hospice of Durango.
