LOUIS CALVIN "LOUIE" CAUGHEY Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Louis Calvin "Louie" Caughey will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, October 12 at the Cortez Elks Lodge. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery where military honors will be provided by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Visitation has been scheduled for Tuesday evening from 5 to 7 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Louie was born March 16, 1928 in Animas City, Colo. the son of Andrew Ben and Frances Patricia (Nanna) Caughey. He passed away on Saturday, October 8, 2011 at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 83. Louie was a highly respected member in the Cortez community. He worked for many years for the Montezuma County Road Department. He devoted many years teaching in the local school district, finally retiring from teaching in 1984. Louie also spent time farming and raising cattle. It didn't matter what he was doing, Louie gained great satisfaction from working. He was a lifetime member of the Cortez Elks Lodge and the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. In his free time, Louie devoted much of his time watching and helping with local rodeos. He loved his grandchildren dearly, and Louie also held a special place in his heart for all the kids he taught over the years. Surviving Louie are his children, Luann Meyer and husband, Art of Cortez, and Gary Caughey of Cortez; his four grandchildren, Cody Meyer and wife, Katie, Kady Meyer, Kailee Caughey, and Shelby Caughey; and by his beloved 1970 Chevy pickup, "Samanthie". Louie was preceded in death by his parents; by his former wife, Janet Caughey; and by his sister, Betty Cole. Memorial contributions may be made in Louie's name to Dolores State Bank.
