LOIS AKIN Lois Mildred Johnson Akin was born on April 25, l922 at McPhee, Colo. and passed away on September 23, 2010. She was the daughter of Lewis Edward and Navie Sagrillo Johnson. Lois was a fourth generation descendant of pioneer Charles (Racehorse) and Mary Johnson who homesteaded the lower Dolores Valley (McPhee), and 3rd generation descendant of John and Clementine Sagrillo. Lois attended Dolores schools, graduating in 1939 and attended college in Riverside, CA until she enlisted in the military (WAC) in April of 1942. She was stationed at Brooks Air Base in San Antonio, Tex. until discharged in October 1945. She returned to Dolores where she married Donald L. Akin on March 31, 1946. They were married for 51 years and had two children: Donna and Donald Jr. Lois worked as administrative secretary for the Dolores School District for 20 years, retired and a year later started work at Montezuma Water Company for 12 more years, then retired again. She was a volunteer at the Dolores Visitor Center and also at the Bullhead City Hospital, Ariz., for many years. Preceding her in death were her parents, Lewis and Navie Johnson (Ritter); husband Donald L. Akin; son-in-law Karl Stroup; brother-in-law James Miller; and sister-in-law Georgia Johnson. Surviving are her daughter, Donna Stroup and her partner, Bruce Dyer; her son and wife, Don Jr. and Mary Sue Akin of Cortez, Colo.; her brother Charles (Buddy) Johnson of Dolores; and her sister Luella Miller of Mancos, Colo. A memorial service is planned for October 3, 2010 at 3:00 pm at the Johnson Memorial Methodist Church in Dolores. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that any memorial contributions be made to Hospice of Montezuma, P.O. Box 740, Cortez, CO 81321.
