LEONARD WALTER WARD Memorial services for former longtime, Cortez resident, Leonard Walter Ward will be held at 11 a.m. on Wedensday, September 21 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Leonard was born on November 7, 1932 in Cortez the son of Glen Leroy and Sylvia May (Baysinger) Ward. He passed away on Sunday, September 11, 2005 at his home in Roseburg, Oreg. Leonard was 72 years old. After growing up in the Cortez area and graduating from Montezuma Cortez High School in 1951, Leonard went on to enlist in the U.S. Army. He served his country well during the Korean Conflict. On July 10, 1954 in Durango Leonard married JoAnne. In 1955 they moved to Antioch, Calif. where Leonard worked for Johns Manville in Pittsburg, Calif. for 36 years. In 1991 he retired and moved back to Cortez. He was a true servant of God. Leonard was a member of both St. Phillip's and St. Barnabas Episcopal Church. He loved and served his church with his many works. He worked at Grace's Kitchen for a number of years as well. Leonard was a person who said little but who showed his faith and commitment to God by his works. Surviving Leonard are his wife, JoAnne Ward; his children, Daniel Ward and wife, Lynn, Pam Ward and fiancé, Rick Tilley all of Antioch, Calif., and Dan Ward and wife, Janice of Cortez; his grandchildren, Samantha Ward of Cortez, and Jason Ward who is serving in the Navy. He leaves his siblings, Margorie Meister, Kenneth Ward and Glen Ward all of Cortez. Preceding him in death were his parents; his sister, Wanlee Markham; and his half-brother, Dean Woodard. In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorial contributions be made in Leonard's memory to Hospice of Montezuma or to a charity of your choice.
