LAWRENCE OSCAR “NICK” NICHOLS Funeral services for lifelong Cortez resident Lawrence Oscar “Nick” Nichols will be held at 10 a.m. on Saturday, October 28 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Pastor Stuart Hanold will officiate. A visitation has been scheduled for Friday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at the Ertel Chapel. Nick was born on August 7, 1916 in Lebanon, Colo., the son of Daniel Edward and Govea Lowe (Padgett) Nichols. He passed away on Sunday, October 22, 2006 at the Valley Inn Nursing Home at the age of 90. On June 19, 1938, Nick married Marjorie Elma Lester in Cortez. Nick was an avid square dancer. He began dancing in 1950 and was later inducted into the New Mexico Square Dancers Hall of Fame. Nick and Marjorie spent countless hours dancing and sharing their love of the pastime. Nick was an integral part of moving the Sale Barn. He spent many days assisting in the daily workings of the livestock sale business. Surviving Nick are his daughters, Judith Johnson and husband, George Duane of Chico, Calif., Joyce Periman and husband, Mitchell of Cortez, and Carol Martin also of Cortez; his sister, Norma Englehart of Albuquerque, N.M.; and his eight grandchildren, and 11 great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Marjorie Nichols; two brothers; and two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made in Nick's memory to Community Bank in Cortez.
