Kevin Cyrus Johnson

Services will be held at a later date for Cortez resident Kevin Cyrus Johnson.

Kevin was born November 3, 1948 in Cortez, CO the son of Charles Joseph and Janice Lavina (Baker) Johnson. He passed away on Wednesday, November 25, 2020 at San Juan Regional Medical Center in Farmington, NM at the age of 72.

Kevin was a proud Vietnam Vet, a horseman, a hunter, a friend, a son, a brother, a husband, a father, a father-in-law, a grandpa, a gentleman and an all-around great man. He always loved to laugh and have a good time. He never knew a stranger. If he wasn’t teasing you he didn’t like you, which he teased everyone. Kevin loved to tell stories, sometimes more than once or twice. He was one of those men that everyone wanted to be around. He was always there to lend a helping hand. In his earlier years he loved to ride bulls and break horses that no one could ride. After he married Janet, he changed his love to roping, riding, and of course his family. His horses were his prize possessions, but that didn’t stop him from riding a wild cow or two. Most of all, he loved helping others with bull riding, roping and riding, especially local kids and his grandkids. Later in his life, he was an avid team roper. He was a fierce competitor, but always willing to help out his competition. The last few years of his life, he would help with breaking colts, working and checking cows, building and fixing fence, and irrigating. He loved riding range and roping with his grandkids, they meant the world to him. He touched many lives and will be greatly missed. He always said that he would never die because Hell had a restraining order against him and we’d all have a laugh, but secretly hoped it was true. He always said, “he would go out with his boots on”, and that’s what he did.

Surviving Kevin are his children, Lex Johnson (Kaytlyn) of Cortez, CO, Erin Carlson (Ryan) of Fort Morgan, CO; his partner, Carol Click of Cortez, CO; and his two grandchildren, Cyrus and Tiptin Carlson. Kevin was preceded in death by his parents; his spouse, Janet (Rea) Johnson; and his sister, Myrna Johnson.
