KAREN MARIE WHYTE MILLS Funeral services for Towaoc resident Karen Marie Whyte Mills will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, August 9 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Visitation has been set for Wednesday evening at 5 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Rosary will follow at 6 p.m. at Ertel Chapel. Karen was born the daughter of Marshall Whyte and Harriet Beecher Whyte on June 29, 1944 in rural La Plata County, Colo. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Monday, August 6, 2012 at the age of 68. On January 25, 1985 Karen married George Mills Jr. Karen loved horses and while a young woman was named Miss Ute Mountain Rodeo Queen in 1962. She also enjoyed the pow wows. Karen had worked in the health clinic and the Ute Mountain Tribal Park. Surviving Karen are her husband of 27 years, George Mills Jr. of Towaoc. She was preceded in death by her three brothers, Stanley Whyte, Paul Whyte and Clifford B. Whyte.
