JULIA JEAN SHIFFLET HANEY Funeral services for Cortez resident Julia Jean Shifflet Haney will be held at 2 p.m. on Friday, October 10 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Cortez Cemetery. Bishop Spencer Smith will officiate. Visitation has been scheduled for Friday afternoon beginning at 1 p.m. at Ertel Chapel. Jean was born on August 14, 1923 in Belvue, Kan. the daughter of Coleman Robert and Mary Viola (Ault) Shifflet. She passed away on Tuesday, October 7, 2008 at Aspen Gardens Assisted Living at the age of 85. On January 24, 1942, Jean married Ray B. Haney in Raton, N.M. Jean and Ray previously lived in Pueblo, Colo., Farmington, N.M. and Durango. While in Durango, Jean and Ray owned and operated Jean's Sewing Nook for 19 years. The couple then relocated to Cortez to be closer to their family. Jean was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. She was a wonderful seamstress and loved any craft that involved the use of her hands. Jean made beautiful afghans. She also enjoyed gardening and raising beautiful flowers. Surviving Jean are her husband of 66 years, Ray B. Haney of Cortez; and her daughters, Sharon J. Kitchel and husband, James of Newcastle, Calif., and Patti R. Plemons and husband, Roy of Cortez. Jean also leaves behind nine grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and her siblings, Robert Shifflet and wife, Darlene of Pueblo, Colo., Betty Hansen and husband, Rex of Kaysville, Utah, Donna Buys and husband, Richard of Pleasant Grove, Utah, Richard Shifflet and wife, Betty of Pueblo, Colo., Janice Spinuzzi of Pueblo, Colo., and Lowell Shifflet and wife, Gwen of Las Vegas, Nev. Jean was preceded in death by her parents; and five siblings.
