Joy Raye Goode Harris

JOY RAYE GOODE HARRIS Word has been received of the recent death of former Montezuma County resident, Joy Raye (Goode) Harris, at her home in Portland, Oreg. Joy, daughter of Lenore and Jim Goode, was born June 8, 1951 in Cortez. As a young girl, Joy’s passion was swimming. She and her friends were talented members of a synchronized swimming club, performing intricate and difficult maneuvers in annual shows at the Cortez pool. Their performances always received rave revues. The many, happy times shared with family and friends during her childhood in the Dolores River Valley were some of her fondest memories. Joy attended Dolores schools, later moving to California where she completed a course at the John Roberts Powers School of Modeling, in Los Angeles. She began working for K-Mart in 1971, serving as Regional Office Supervisor for the intermountain area and later in St. Louis, Mo. She held this position until her marriage to John Harris on May 15, 1976. After 10 years of marriage, Joy and John were blessed by the arrival of their wonderful son, Jonathan Majors Harris. The family lived in the San Diego, Calif. area where John was employed by American Building Maintenance Co. In 1989, as a single mom, Joy moved to Tigard, Oreg. Here Jonathan graduated from Tigard High School and completed three years at Oregon State University in Corvallis before joining the service on October 20, 2005. Joy resided in the Portland area until her passing. She is survived by her beloved son, Jonathan, a proud member of the US Army; mother, Lenore Goode of Cortez; her brothers and their families, Ken, Joanne, Journey and Billy Goode, and Bill, Kay and Callie Goode all of Cortez; former husband, John L. Harris of San Diego, Calif.; as well as, several uncles, aunts, cousins and friends across the country. Preceding her in death were her father, James J. Goode; her brother, Kelvin W. Goode; and both maternal and paternal grandparents. Cremation has taken place. Joy will be laid to rest in the family plot at the Summit Ridge Cemetery in a private burial.
