John Joseph Listemann passed away on 07/31/2023 at the Beehive Home in Cortez, CO. He moved to Cortez in March of 1998 with his wife Suzanne after he retired from Rocky Flats, and together they enjoyed the out of doors, especially hiking, joining the Archeology Society and Community Concerts of which John served as President for several years. He was a member of St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church in Cortez, where he was a Knight of Columbus and a member of the Men's Club.
John was born to Felix and Dorothy Listemann in St. Louis, MO on December 13, 1931. The family left St. Louis for Rochester, NY for a few years, but soon returned to St. Louis where John graduated from Christian Brothers High School in 1950 and attended Washington University. After a year he left college to enlist in the army where he served in Korea as a medic. On returning home from service John attended Colorado College in Colorado Springs, CO, where he graduated in 1958 with a degree in Chemistry. Shortly after graduation he married Suzanne Gray of Colorado Springs.
John began his career with Lever Brothers and was transferred several times, moving the family from Missouri to Michigan, Indiana, Tennessee and Kentucky. While in Kentucky John returned to school and obtained a Master’s Degree in Industrial Health and Safety from Murray State University. He and Suzanne then returned to Colorado where the balance of his career was spent with the Rocky Flats Nuclear Facility clean-up. After retirement he and Suzanne relocated to Cortez where he spent the next 25 years.
John is survived by his wife Rev. Suzanne (nee Gray), two sons Mark (Denise), Paul, one granddaughter, Tara (Brent) and two great grandsons, Benjamin and Gabriel. Ertel’s is coordinating the Cortez, CO arrangements. Visitation will be at Ertel’s Thursday 08/03/2023 from 5 to 7pm with a Funeral Mass at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church Friday 08/04/2023 at 10:00am. Interment will be in Bellefontaine Cemetery in St. Louis, MO Saturday 08/12/2023 at 10:30am with a brief viewing and prayers beforehand at Lupton Chapel starting at 9:00am. Lupton Chapel is coordinating the St. Louis arrangements. In lieu of flowers the family asks that donations be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, act.alz.org.
