John H. Gomez

JOHN H. GOMEZ Memorial Mass will be held for John H. Gomez a longtime Cortez resident at 10 a.m. on Monday, April 11 at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. Father Pat Valdez will officiate. Rosary Services are set for Sunday evening at 7 p.m. at St. Margaret Mary Catholic Church. John was born October 17, 1929 at McPhee, Colo. to Guillermo and Lee (Jacquez) Gomez. He passed away at Mercy Medical Center in Durango on Wednesday, April 6, 2011 at the age of 81. John proudly served his country in the U.S. Army Air Corp. After his discharge he became a member of the American Legion. In 1953 John married Dorothy Duran in Durango. The couple moved their family to Cortez in 1965. John served in many capacities with San Juan Basin Vo-Tech. He served as Administrator for 16 years and also worked as Financial Aide and Job Placement Officer. A lover of the outdoors, John enjoyed hunting, fishing and R.V.ing. He also was a tinkerer by nature; nothing was free from examination or repair. Surviving John are his beloved wife, Dorothy Gomez of Cortez; two sons, Terry Gomez and wife, Helena of Durango, and Richard Gomez and wife, Jody of Cortez; and by one granddaughter, Kyley Gomez of Cortez. Also surviving John are his three brothers, Al Gomez and wife, Betty of Denver, Colo., Gary Gomez and wife, Cathy of Golden, Colo., and Phil Gomez and wife, Toni of Pueblo, Colo.; by four sisters, Chris Lucero of Durango, Liz Gomez of Durango, Isabel Gardner and husband, Don of Louisville, Ky., and Carol Moon of Mount Olive, Ala.; by a sister-in-law, Cathy Gomez of Laporte, Colo.; and by numerous nieces and nephews. John was preceded in death by his parents; and by one brother, Bob Gomez.
