John Bloom Reed

JOHN BLOOM REED Funeral services for lifelong area resident John Bloom Reed will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, May 4 at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Fairview Cemetery. Reverend Bud Rousset will officiate. Military honors will be provided by the Ute Mountain American Legion Post #75. Visitation has been scheduled for Tuesday afternoon from 4 to 7 p.m. at Ertel Chapel. John was born on April 12, 1926 in Yellow Jacket the son of Sheldon Missouri and Mahulda Ellen (Stevenson) Reed. He passed away on Thursday, April 28, 2011 at Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 85. On December 14, 1997, John married Esther Milligan at the Marvel Methodist Church in Marvel, Colo. John spent 40+ years shoeing horses and he also devoted much of his life to raising cattle and sheep herding. In his free time John enjoyed hunting and horseback riding. John truly loved animals, he considered any animal that crossed his path a "pet." Surviving John are his wife of 13 years, Esther Reed of Cortez; and his children, Wanda Knight and husband, Mike of Portland, Ore., Brad Reed and wife, Dawn of Cortez, and Doris Massey of Dolores. John also leaves behind his step-children, Kenny Beam, Lynda K. Head, and Scott Beam and all of their spouses; 17 grandchildren; 19 great-grandchildren; by his two dogs, Betty and Skip; by his cat, Lacy; and by his horse, Mac. John was preceded in death by his parents; by his wife, Florene Reed; by two infant children, Mary Alice Reed and Steven Edward Reed; by his granddaughter, Randi Reed; by six brothers; and by two sisters. Memorial contributions may be made in John's name to Hospice of Montezuma, P.O. Box 740 Cortez, Colo. 81321.
