JOE EDGAR BLACKMER Funeral services for lifelong area resident Joe Edgar Blackmer will be held at 10 a.m. on Friday, December 30 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow at Summit Ridge Cemetery. Visitation has been set for Thursday afternoon from 4 to 6 p.m. at Ertel Memorial Chapel. Joe was born June 6, 1926 in Cortez to Charles Edgar and Leah (Taylor) Blackmer. He passed away at his Cortez home on Friday, December 23, 2011 at the age of 85. Joe's family originated in the Cortez area in the 1870's with the arrival of the Simon family. A WWII Veteran, Joe served in the U.S. Navy, turning 18 years old on D-Day. Joe was also a member of the "Kilroy" club. He was a truck driver for many years and enjoyed farming and ranching. In his spare time, he loved watching the Denver Broncos and spending time with his beloved dog, Nellie. Surviving Joe are his children, Jody Blackmer of Cortez, Holly Alm and husband, John of Grand Junction, Colo., and William Blackmer and wife, Peggy of Dolores; his five grandchildren, Joed Foster and wife, Amanda of Denver, Colo., Zach Foster and wife, Trish of Phoenix, Ariz., Merica Street and husband, Jim of Grand Junction, Colo., Charley Blackmer and wife, Katie of Dolores, and Kyle Blackmer and wife, Devon of Mancos; and his eight great grandchildren, Isabel, Hayden, Trenton, Morgan, Lincoln, Jaden, Jaren and Kennadee. Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Charles and Leah Blackmer; and his siblings, Mabel McComb, Fred Blackmer, Frank Blackmer, and Eileen Bose. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Joe E. Blackmer with For Pet's Sake, P.O. Box 1705, Cortez.
