Janice Kay Stone

JANICE KAY STONE Memorial services for lifelong area resident, Janice Kay Stone, will be held at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, May 20 at the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church. A luncheon will follow the services in the Fellowship Hall. Janice Kay Stone was born April 16, 1935 in Lewis, Colorado on her grandfather's homestead on the Dolores River Rim. She passed away peacefully at her home on May 15, 2015. Janice was the oldest of three girls born to Dave and Fran Higgins. In her younger years Janice was active in 4-H and a member of the square dance team. She graduated from Montezuma-Cortez High School in 1953. She attended Colorado A&M College and worked in the cafeteria. Following college she worked as a bookkeeper and receptionist at Southwest Memorial Hospital. In February 1955 she became reacquainted with Jerald Stone and was engaged in August. She quit her job in November and was married December 4, 1955. In 1966 Janice began work as a bookkeeper which occupied her time for the next 30 + years. Janice was very active in the Montezuma Valley Presbyterian Church. She was an ordained Deacon, Elder and Session Clerk. She also volunteered in the church office, played the organ for worship services, and taught church school class for several years. Janice also served as the treasurer of the Presbytery. She and Jerald had some interesting travel trips to Hawaii, Europe, Mexico and Alaska. Janice was a devoted Christian and the cheerful gift of her time and abilities is her thanksgiving for the blessings which God has given to her. Left to remember her are her loving husband, Jerald Stone; sisters, Venita Joseph and husband, Mike, and Iris Johnson and husband, Derrill; and her children Michael Stone and wife, Mary, Douglas Stone and wife, Cathy, Daren Stone and wife, Kathy, and Kerry Staab and husband, Ken. Janice has six grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. The family would like to express their appreciation for the acts of kindness during her lengthy illness. Janice has requested that memorials be sent to Montezuma-Valley Presbyterian Church in Cortez, Colorado.
