Janet Caryl Brown Mccabe

February 28, 1932 — February 12, 2006

JANET CARYL BROWN McCABE Funeral services for Janet Caryl Brown McCabe, a lifelong resident of this area will be held at 10 a.m. on Wednesday, February 15 at Cortez First United Methodist Church. Reverend Lynn Evans will officiate. Interment will follow at the Cortez Cemetery. Janet was born the daughter of Byron Douglas and Mary Teresa (Belmear) Brown on February 28, 1932 in Dolores, Colo. She passed away at Southwest Memorial Hospital on Sunday, February 12, 2006 at the age of 73. On January 1, 1951 in Mancos, Colo., Janet became the bride of Howard H. McCabe. Together they spent 51 years devoted to one another before Howard’s death in 2002. Janet returned to college after her children had reached school age, receiving her degree in Education. Janet spent the next 20 years teaching at M-CHS sharing her love of education. Janet held a deep love of family, friends, books, and ideas. Whenever someone came to her for advice she knew there was a passage within one of her books that would offer a perfect thought. She generously shared her time with her grandchildren, giving them the gift of music and books. Janet was often quoted saying “a house with music is more powerful than a house with money.” She found ways to broaden herself through her grandchildren’s interests, never guiding what interest they would share, rather learning new things through the children’s eyes. Janet volunteered her time and skills to Hospice of Montezuma and the Cortez Cultural Center. She was also a member of P.E.O. and Cortez First United Methodist Church. Surviving Janet are her children, Kelly R. McCabe and wife, Sara of Cortez and Kimberly K. Franchini and husband, Steve also of Cortez; eight grandchildren, Katie McCabe, Brianna VanDyke and husband, Jonathan, Bryson McCabe, Sean McCabe, Kylan McCabe, Ryan McCabe, Karlyn Franchini and Alyssa Franchini; and one great grandson, Finnley Howard VanDyke. Her brother Morrison Brown and wife, Carla of Cortez; daughter-in-law, Shawna LaField of Grand Junction; and sister-in-law, Janet Brown of Cortez also survive Janet. She was preceded in death by her parents, Byron and Mary Brown; husband, Howard McCabe; son, Kevin McCabe; and brother, Belmear Brown. Memorial contributions can be made in memory of Janet Brown McCabe with Citizens State Bank to benefit American Diabetes Association, Hospice of Montezuma and the Cortez Cultural Center. Her family acknowledges the gratitude to family, friends and fellow teachers for their prayers and support.
