James Lionel Smith

JAMES LIONEL SMITH James Lionel Smith was born January 8, 1939 in Olean, N.Y., the son of Marshall and Frances (Patterson) Smith. He passed away on Thursday, May 26, 2005 at his home in Cortez at the age of 66. Jim relocated to the Corte area four years ago. He was a Viet Nam Veteran, serving his country in the Air Force. His respect for Native Americans and their culture encouraged Jim to take his love of woodworking and began making Native American courting flutes. He was a member of the Southwest Woodworkers Guild. He was also an active woodsman and hunter. Surviving Jim are his wife, Karen Crane of Cortez; his mother, Frances Kingston of Olean, N.Y.; his children, Erin Smith and Jon Smith both of Alabama; and his brother, Paul Smith of Florida. Memorial services will be held at a later date.
