JAMES HOWARD DAVES Loving husband, father, grandfather, brother and friend, James Howard Daves, age 69 of Cahone, Colo. passed away on Thursday, January 27, 2005 at his home. James was born in Quail, Tex. on January 16, 1936 to Floyd and Glennis Daves. He came to Lewis with his family when he was 1 1/2. His family moved to Dove Creek when he was 4 ½ where he was raised and educated in Dove Creek, graduating from Dove Creek High School on May 28, 1954. While attending high school he was very active in sports for the Dove Creek Bulldogs, lettering in All Conference as a Fullback in football, baseball as Pitcher and First Base with his favorite sport being basketball. On August 18, 1955 he married the love of his life, Imogene Wells at the Memorial Hall in Dove Creek in a double ring ceremony with best friends, Orville and Arveta Lewis. To this union six children were born, Rhonda Sue, James Rodney, Roger Dean, Rita Jean, Roxie Annette and Rebecca Jeannine. The couple made their home in the Dove Creek area for 19 years, and in October of 1976 they built their home in Cahone. James accepted Christ into his life in 1955 and attended both the General Assembly and Church of the Firstborn. James chose to be a farmer at an early age and he and Imogene owned and operated J.H. Daves Farms for 49 years working side by side, providing a good life for their family. He was well known by many in surrounding communities for his knowledge and abilities. During the winter, James worked at Union Carbide to further provide for his family. In 1976 James served as Dolores County FFA Honorary Chapter Farmer. Later his grandson Jarrett wrote a story about him earned James the honor of “Pinto Bean King” in 1992. He served on the Dolores County ASCS Board in his earlier farming career. His life was his work and his family, which he truly enjoyed. Each one held a special place in his heart and you could always hear him telling someone about one or all of his kids and grandkids and something they had said or done. He enjoyed family gatherings, collecting antique John Deere Tractors and replicas, hunting from his truck and good food, especially Imogene’s homemade warm chocolate pudding and his mother’s biscuits and gravy and sausage. James never met a stranger that he didn’t become instant friends with. James was preceded in death by his sister Neta Sue Dunagan in 1951, his father, Floyd in 1995, his mother, Glennis in 1996 and his baby brother, Bobby Joe in 2000. He was loved so much and will be missed even more. Survivors include his wife of 49 years, Imogene, his six children, Rhonda Wright and husband, Terry of Tulare, Calif., Rodney Daves and wife Crystal of Pleasant View, Roger Daves and wife, Keila of Cahone, Rita Davis and husband, Troy of Cahone, Roxie Willbanks and husband, Carl of Clifton, Colo., and Becky Norris and husband, Dan of Cahone; 14 grandchildren, Brandon and Bradley Wright, Tiffany Hartsoe and husband, Jason, Jarrett Daves, Brandi Hocker and husband, Tim, Chance, Michael and Blaine Daves, Kymberlee and Dalton Davis, Shelbey and Canon Willbanks and Jessica and Austin Norris; brothers and sisters, Beverly Wood of Egnar, Earlene White and husband, Jack of Dove Creek, Marlin Daves and wife, Kay of Dove Creek, Wayne Daves and wife, Suzie of Arriola, Kay Daves of Dove Creek, Eddie Daves and wife, Peggy of Cortez, Woodie Daves and wife, Arlene of Dove Creek, Stanley Daves and wife, Charlotte of Dove Creek and Linda Remhert and husband, Paul of Dove Creek and Bobbie Joe’s wife, Margaret Daves of Dove Creek, as well as numerous nieces, nephews, and many, many friends. Remembrances may be made to the James Daves Memorial Fund at Community Bank of Dove Creek or Cortez, and Dolores State Bank in Cortez. Services were held on Tuesday, February 1, 2005 at the Dove Creek Memorial Hall. Interment followed at the Cahone Cemetery.
