JACK GLENN SCHMITTEL Memorial services for longtime Durango resident, Jack Glenn Schmittel will be held at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, August 17 at the Ertel Memorial Chapel. Pastor Larry Chappell will be officiating. Jack was born on November 30, 1925 in Center, Colo. the son of Orville A. and Minnie Frances (Hartman) Schmittel. He passed away on Thursday, August 12, 2004 at the Southwest Memorial Hospital at the age of 78. Jack was best known for the construction of the Rotary Park Gazebo in Durango. He was in the construction business and enjoyed working with, and building things from wood. Jack served in the United States Navy during World War II, and was stationed at Pearl Harbor. On May 18, 1950 in Alamosa, Colo. Jack married Merelyn Johnson. In his spare time Jack liked to fish, hunt, go out on his boat, and found the computer very interesting. There were twelve children in Jack’s family, and he was the youngest of them all. Jack is survived by his brother, Howard; and his sister, Dorothy. His wife, Merelyn Schmittel of Cortez; his three children, Robin Schmittel and wife, Donna of Mancos, Susan Hillmeyer and husband, Roger of Durango, and Barbara Davis and husband, Tom of Glendale, Ariz. He leaves six grandchildren, Kendra Schmittel-Woodman and husband, Buck, Sean Hillmeyer, Adam Davis, Katelyn Hillmeyer, Brianna Schmittel, and Kyle Davis; as well as one great-grandson, Beau Woodman. Preceding him in death were his parents; and nine siblings. Memorial contributions can be made in Jack’s memory to any charity concentrating on lung or Asthma conditions, or a research fund for Pulmonary Fibrosis.
